Prehistoric, Pleistocene Landscape

Pleistocene landscape. An epoch of the Quaternary period, also known as the Ice Age, stretching from the end of the Pliocene, some million years ago, to the beginning of the Holocene (although this date may be revised in the light of recent evidence from deep-sea cores). During the Pleistocene, temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere varied between the very cold glacials and the warmer interglacials. Characterized by the appearance and worldwide spread of hominids, and the extinction of numerous land mammals, such as the mammoths, mastodons, and saber-toothed tigers. By the Pleistocene most fauna and flora had their current appearance. Illustration originally captioned: Pleistocene landscape by Franz Unger, 1916.
