He was of an oldJN ew l!;nglaud family, and his father was a merchant,at one tmie possessed of considerable wealth. Fourot the sons school years were spent at Round Hill,Aorthampton, where he had the late J. G. Cogswelland George Bancroft forteachers. In 1838 he en-tered Harvard, and wasnoted for his proficiency instudy. After graduating heentered the Harvard divin-ity school, left it for theSouth, returned to it again,and while completing histheological course main-tained himself by teach-ing. He went to the Southa second time, but dislikingJw slavery, returned, and in1838 was ordained pastor ofthe First Unitarian Con-gregational church of NewYork city. In this posi-tion he remained forty-fouryears, growing continuallym influence, and in the esteem of his fellow-citi-zens. As a public speaker Dr. Bellows had greatreadiness of utterance.
