The legendary stone bridge of Arta, the most historic bridge in Greece.

The stone bridge of Arta, in Epirus region, Greece, holds a special place in Greece's popular history. Its construction was associated with several legends, myths and folk songs. As it occured with many bridges in the entire Balkan area, the bridge of Arta was extremely hard to establish: the banks of the river Arahthos weren't easy to dominate, so the bridge kept collapsing over and over again. The solution was to sacrifice the stonemason's wife, who, according to the legend and the song, was "built in" or "walled up" (immurement) in the bridge. This kind of legends, connecting the success in the building of a bridge with a "sacrifice" are very common throughout the Balkans.
