IS J. WATTRON. Rev. Francis J. Wattron was bornin Alsace, France, on July the 8th,1833. At the age of seventeen he cameto this country with the intention ofstudying for the priesthood. Soonafter his arrival here he entered College, Atchison. Aftera successful course at St. Benedicts hewent to St. Francis Seminary, Mil-waukee, and after completing his theo-logical studies he was ordained priestby Bishop Miege at Leavenworth,Kansas, on the 8th of August, 1865. Paola was his first api3ointment. Heremained here nine years, and duringthat time accomplished much for thesalvation of souls and for the welfareof religion. An unrecorded chapter inREV. FRANCIS J. In 1865the war had ceased its deadly strife, and people began to settle down tonormal habits of peace. New families began to move on the land andthe population increased daily. North of Paola, along the Bull Creek. HOLY TRINITY CHURCH, PAOLA 93 district, several Catholic families had built their homes, and thesetogether with the people of the Irish Settlement on the south, madePaola a center of church activity. Father Favre, who had succeededFather Schacht on the mission, found himself powerless to do anythingtowards the completion of the church which stood there as an abandonedbuilding—a shelter for cattle, swallows and pigeons.
