Subsequently, bluegill, Lepomis macrochirus; carp, Cyprinus carpio, and on one occasion, threadfin shad were observed feeding within the nests, presumably on eggs or fry. The nests were not defended against these fishes, even though the parental bass remained nearby. No fry survival was observed in any of the study nests during the period of rising water levels.
