The area is a significant producer of field vegetables and crops under glass/plastic. The farming land allocated to fruit and vegetables production in the authority area represents 94% of the Lancashire total and 71% of the North West total. Some of the numerous enterprises active in this production are Huntapac Produce Ltd, a large and well-established family firm that grows, packs and distributes organic and conventional root vegetables, brassicas and salads to most of the major supermarkets.
