An easy walk of ten miles wouldthen lead us to the Rhone valley, not far, byrail, from Visp, where the train can be takento Zermatt. But on our present trip we are to reachthe same destination by a far more circuitousroute. Taking the steamer at Interlaken wesail over the blue waters of Lake Brienz tothe town of the same name, where we takethe train to Meiringen, the most importantvillage of the Hash Valley. It is now almostentirely new, for in 1891, while the dreadedFohn was blowing, a fire broke out and ina short time nearly every building had be-come a victim to the flames. To the southrise the steep mountain walls, with the Reich-enbach Falls, in which, as the reader of ConanDoyle will remember, Sherlock Holmes foundhis end, at least so it was supposed, until itpleased the author to revive him again. Highon the opposite cliff, some two thousandfeet high, and so steep that no carriage canIJG. The PASS MOUNTAIN PASSES, RAILROADS, TUNNELS ascend, is situated the picturesque valley ofReuti. Some years ago I had the pleasureof spending two weeks in this primitive,high-upland Swiss village, and of seeing closeat hand the life of the Swiss peasant in hisown home. No more beautiful place existsthan this broad meadow-land or terrace, withits velvety green pastures, its clear runningmurmuring streams, which gently approachthe edge of the enormous cliff, and thentumble down in torrents and cascades. Andin the morning and at night-time from thewindow of our chalet we could see, acrossthe narrow valley, the gleaming of the whitefoam of the Reichenbach Falls, and above it,the Rosenlaui Glacier and the snow-crownedsummits of the Matterhorn, the Finsteraar-horn, and others, sparkling in the sunlight,or touched to silver by the soft light of themoon. The occupation of the people of Reuti ischiefly that of raising cattle
