He found time, however, fromhis other occupations, to engagein pul)lic affairs, and. a forcefulorator, was frequently called tothe platform in the interest of the democratic party, with which he hasalways been associated. Mr. Martine stood by the party colors, and wasnot only the warm advocate of Mr. Bryans election but Mr. Bryans closepersonal friend as I Martine 343Mr. Martines popularity made liis name desirable for party uses andhe was frequently drafted from the ranks to run for political position Hisparty friends made him its candidate for various city offices. He was can-didate for Congress four times and for comity offices and upon one or twooccasions for the gubernatorial nommation. But his mdependence madehim not entirely acceptable to the ruling powers in the party, and theUnited States Senatorship is the only one of all for which he was namedthat he succeeded in achieving. In the state campaign of 1910 Mr. Martines friends petitioned him tobecome a candidate, in the primary to be held under the Preferential Lawfor the United States and he entered the list. Some republicanswere also candidates on the other side. Mr. Martine had an overwhelm
