Loose smut of wheat, caused by Ustilago tritici (fig. 37), is similar to the disease of barley of the same name, infection taking place in the flowers so that the fungus is inside the seed when planted. Loose smut of wheat is not serious enough in California to need treatment. Speckled Leaf Blotch.—This disease is characterized by light spots about the size of pinheads appearing on the leaves.
