Remnants of a munitions plant, Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, Illinois, United States

Plants are beginning to invade this munitions plant in Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, Illinois. Midewin was created from land that was part of the Joliet Army Ammunition Plant until 1997. Remnants of munitions plants , bunkers and over 200 miles of roads and railroads still exist there. With wetlands, native upland prairie plants, short grasslands, and rare dolomite prairie habitat, Midewin provides perhaps Illinois's last opportunity to restore a prairie ecosystem for the upland sandpiper, bobolink, and loggerhead shrike whose numbers are declining in Illinois.
