Cartilage tissue. Coloured, highly magnified scanning electron micrograph of articular hyaline cartilage. Cartilage is a type of connective tissue and consists of cells, called chondrocytes (not seen here), embedded in an intercellular matrix synthesised and secreted by them. The cartilage matrix occupies the frame and is made up of connective collagen (top) and elastin fibres (bottom). Articular hyaline cartilage covers the ends of long bones and its smooth and slippery surface facilitates the movement of the joints. Magnification: x6400 at 6x7cm size.
