Twin engine Lockheed Electra monoplane, aeroplane metal fabricated sculpture in Ainsdale, Merseyside, UK. Colourful sunrise silhouettes of public art aircraft at dawn. This 25 foot high Lockheed Electra plane and New York skyline sculpture in Ainsdale was designed to commemorate the transatlantic flight made from Ainsdale in 1937.
The sculpture marks Ainsdale’s part in aviation history. It commemorates the day in May 1937 when a large crowd gathered around the Ainsdale and Birkdale foreshore to witness the take-off of a twin-engined monoplane destined for New York, the Lockheed Electra. It was piloted by two American pilots, Dick Merrill and Jack Lambie, and arrived in New York 24 hours and 22 minutes later.
