On October 24, 1S61, he was appointeda Second Lieutenant in the regular Army, and wasassigned to the Eighteenth United States BRIGADIER GENERAL DANIEL W STATES ARMY. 349 His thorough business education had qualified himeminently for the duties of an executive officer, andhe was early assigned to duty as a staff officer. Hewas engaged in the Campaign in Kentucky underGeneral Thomas, i.:^6i-2 ; the battle of PittsburgLanding, 1862, under General Buell, and the siege ofCorinth and the pursuit of General Bragg, under thesame officer in the same campaign. In the latter partof 1S62 and the early months of 1863, he was withGeneral Rosecrans in his Memphis and ChattanoogaCampaigns, and in the pursuit of the Confederatesafter the battle of Mission Ridge. He served underGeneral Sherman in his famous march from At-lanta to the Sea, participating in all of the engage-ments of that historic campaign, and accompanyingthat Army in its triumphal march through the Caro-linas and Virginia to \Vashington, terminating inthe grand review in May, 1865.
