DR. P. H. MELL PATRICK HUES MELL Patrick Hues Mell, A. B., C. E., M. E., Ph. D., wasborn in Penfield, Ga., May 24, 1850. His father, Dr. Mell, was a distinguished educator, and late Chancellorof the University of Georgia. In 1871, Dr. Mell graduated at the University ofGeorgia with the degree of A. B., and in 1872 took a post-graduate course with the degree of C. E. and M. E., andin 1880 the degree of Ph. D. was conferred upon him. From 1873 to l&74 ne was mining expert of copper andgold mining companies in Georgia and North Carolina,and from 1874 to 1878 was State Chemist of Georgia. Dr. Mell was elected to the Chair of Geology and Botanyin the Alabama Polytechnic Institute at Auburn in 1878,which position he held with distinction, and to the entiresatisfaction of all interested in the institution, until hiselection to the Presidency of Clemson College, August29, 1902. The present system of weather signals now in use bythe United States Weather Bureau was invented by him,at
