Wabash Ave. contracts with American growers are indeed ; "The crop of beet is just being har- vested with us at the present time," said Frederick M. Clark, at Milford, August 12, "and is of normal acreage. Although the yield has been somewhat lessened by excessive rain during July, we have a pretty good average crop. We cannot as yet estimate the yield, but think it will be at least normal. "Our onion seed crop is looking well at this time. Our acreage of this is normal, and, while the rain during the last week of July materially interfered with the setting of the seeds, the balance is coming into boll at the present time and bids fair to make a good crop. It is, however, the height of the critical stage with this crop and adverse weather conditions may yet materially affect it. We do not know about this crop until it is harvested, which will be much later than usual this season. From present indications, cutting will not start before August 20 to 25. "Sweet corn is backward, but is making exceedingly rapid progress at this time. If the present forcing hot weather continues, I believe we shall make a normal crop of this standard article.'' ADAPTATION OF PLANTS TO SOIL [Contlnned from page 44.] and the seedlings make better growth when the soil is slightly compacted. The total exclusion of air from seeds, how- ever, as shown by experiments with a vacuum, prevents germination. A
