Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Propionibacterium acnes, gram positive, rod shaped bacterium that lives on the skin. When sebaceous glands are clogged with sebum, this bacteria multiplies quickly and breaks the sebum down into irritating fatty acids that cause an immune response. This bacterium causes the condition known as acne or acne vulgaris. Magnification: x1,200 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
