Transmission electron micrograph (shadow method) of the bacterium Pseudomonas syringae. The shadow technique clearly reveals several flagella (right). Pseudomonas syringae act as nuclei for the formation of ice crystals once the temperature falls below a certain level. This ability was discovered during research into frost prevention for plants. The possiblity of using these ice nucleating bacteria as an alternative to existing methods of making artificial snow is under research. Their use in the frozen food industry is also under consideration.
