The rich or official Chinese on a journey alwaysuses a sedan chair borne by two, three, or fourmen, according to his jneans and station, and fol-lowed by a line of coolies carrying the miscella-neous lot of goods and encumbrances supposed tobe necessary for his comfort. Such a man neverwalks, as it would be quite beneath his dignity todo so.
