The orthoceras fossils in this piece of black Moroccan limestone come from a species of extinct marine cephalopods known as orthocone nautiloids. They date from the Devonian Period, approximately 400 million years ago. They are ancestors of ammonites, squids, octopuses and cuttlefish.
