British-German geneticist Sir Walter Fred Bodmer (born 1936) and US evolutionary biologist and geneticist Richard Charles 'Dick' Lewontin at a conference. (born 1929). Bodmer works on population genetics and was one of the first to propose the idea of the Human Genome Project. He is currently (as of 2015) Head of the Cancer and Immunogenetics Laboratory in the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine at the University of Oxford. Lewontin is a leader in developing the mathematical basis of population genetics and evolutionary theory. He pioneered the application of techniques from molecular biology, such as gel electrophoresis, to questions of genetic variation and evolution. Photographed in 1965.
