A suggestion made at the executive meet- ing is receiving attention, namely, that a fund be established for the creation of an award in the shape of a medal to be granted from time to time to men who have done muofi for the wel- fare and development of the industry in Canada. There is an .unlimited field for work along such lines as these. Registration has reached a point where really practical work is being done, thanks to the enthusiasm and labor of H. J. Moore. Tariff and taxes are always with us and we need to be watchful. An amount of work impossible of tabula- tion has been done by this' committee under the chairmanship of Major Con- non, and the work is by no means un- necessary. The sales tax is so com- plicated a matter even now that some collectors are insisting on collections of the retail tax, some are asking for payment of tax on all plants sold dur- ing this last bedding season, while in many places the tax was never col- lected or remitted even when it was supposed to be in operation. Should we not get a better interpretation than this? We seek no favors, we want to take our proper share of the financial burden of the state, but we do pro- test against the caprices of minor offi- cials in many of our small cities and towns. We should all pay or none be liable, and I submit that we have a right to expect from the great Depart- ment of Revenue, intelligent and defi- nite rulings on this question.
