The weight of this alternator, complete, is 160 tons, which necessitated the use of eleven eight-wheeled cars for transportation, the armature frame and field cast-ing being each in four parts. The annex was not intended for heavymachinery and was too light to support a traveling crane, so theparts had to be assembled by means of portable cranes and specialdevices. Notwithstanding these difficulties, the machine was erectedin three weeks. [Vol. XVI. No. 44. Experimental Conduit Line of the London City Council In the tramyard of the London County Council at Camberwellis installed an experimental length of an electric tramway track. Theline has been erected so as to be tried under actual working condi-tions ; it is in the open air, has a curve of 90 ft. radius and agiadient of I in 40. The total length of the line is 256 ft. This, the first portion of the electric tramway work of the London CountyCouncil, is now in running order, and surrounded as it is by nu-merous stables, sheds and buildings containing all the paraphernaliaof an extensive system of horse tramways, appeals in a peculiarmanner to the onlooker. In the center of a vast home of the oldesttramway fashions has sprung up a small, one might almost say, atoy, length of the newest tramway practice. The entire plant formedpart of the exhibit of the British Westinghouse Company at theInternational Tramways and Light Rail
