Global biosphere, October 1997. This Mollweide projected data visualization is from a set showing twenty years of Earth's biosphere from September 1997 to September 2017. Data for this visualization was collected from multiple satellites over the period. The ocean chlorophyll content is colour-coded from purple (low) through blue, green, yellow and orange to red (high). The land vegetation (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, NDVI) is colour-coded from brown (low) through light green to dark green (high). The satellites and sensors used are: SeaStar/SeaWiFS, Aqua/MODIS, and Suomi NPP/VIIRS. In the oceans, cooler nutrient-rich areas include coastal regions and areas at the mouths of rivers. On land, the vegetation includes forests and grasslands, while plant life is sparse or non-existent in deserts and icy polar areas.
