Y., wherehis death occurred in 1832. He was quite a prom-inent citizen of that community, and served asCounty Sheriff. The subject of this sketch was only six 3ears ofage when his father died. He remained with liismother until 1843, and then came to Illinois bywa} of the Erie Canal and the Lakes to Chicago,and by team to this county, wliieh he found to bea sparsely settled region. There were no railroads,the nearest markets being Chicago and Milwaukee,and the work of civilization and progress seemedscarcely begun. Mr. Bartholomew began life inthe West as a farm hand, working for his grand-father Sinnmds tliree years, after which lie rentedtlie land upon which he now resides. In 1847, hewent to Joliet, where he spent a year, after whichhe returned to this count}, where he has made hishome continuously since, and during nearly theentire time his present farm has been his home.
