Water may be heated in theouter pail of two-piece thawing kettles, provided the inner pail hasbeen removed; but it is never safe to put a one-piece thawing kettleover a fire, even after the dynamite has been removed, becauseenough nitroglycerin may have leaked out from dynamite previouslythawed, to cause an explosion if the thawing kettle is put over a THAWING KETTLE A simple and effective thawing arrangement may be made bysuspending a small pail or bucket containing the dynamite in alarger bucket partly filled with warm water. Care must be takento prevent any of the water from getting into the inner pail, whichshould have a tight-fitting lid. The whole should be covered witha piece of carpet, or an old coat, until the dynamite has thawed. Priming Placing the detonator in a cartridge or charge of high ex-plosives is called priming it, and the cartridge or part of a cartridgewith the detonator in it is called the * primer * or primer cart-ridge.* The first step in the preparation of the primer is to cut thenecessary length of fuse from the roll, cutting it squarely across andnot diagonally. After carefully inserting the fresh-cut end as far asit will go into the blasting cap, fasten the latter securely to the fusewith a cap crimper. When crimping the blasting cap to the fuse,the crimp should be made near the end which the fuse enters
