Megakaryocyte. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a megakaryocyte cell from bone marrow. The surrounding cells are mainly red blood cells (bright pink) and white blood cells (green nuclei). Megakaryocytes are giant cells that produce platelets (thrombocytes), which are needed for blood clotting. In the centre is a large, multilobed nucleus (pink). The cytoplasm (pale brown) is filled with membranous smooth endoplasmic reticulum and granules (red). Platelets form from portions of the cell that break off. Magnification: x1,500 at 6x7cm size. x5160 at inch size.
