Thisexploit was the cause of the name being bestowed upon. The Giant balloon of M. Nadar- the balloon. The Giant of M. Nadar was exhibited inEngland, and it was an enormoUs one, being an hundredfeet high, and nearly as wide in the widest part. But eventhis machine was outdone by the Godard Montgolfier balloon, which was one hundred and seventeen feet high, gb AERONAUTICS. and carried a stove. We give illustrations of thesecelebrated balloons, and will now pass on to the morescientific portion of the subject and the ascents of and other aeronauts for the purpose of makingmeteorological observations, and the use of balloons forpurposes of observation in war. It appears that the first ascent for scientific investiga-tion was made in the year 1803. The aeronauts wereMessrs. Robertson and Lhoest. They ascended fromHamburg and came down at Hanover, and made mean-time several experiments with reference to the electricalcondition of the atmosphere, its influence upon a magneticneedle, and some experiments with regard to acousticsand heat.
