The ledzhomela was borrowed from Shangaan neighbours, as was the term used to describe it (Lawton 1967: 177), and it has largely replaced the calabash vessel, phafa, which was the traditional Lobedu beer-cup. The large ones are used mainly for cooking porridge and the smaller ones for preparing vegetable relish or meat.
