May i, 1861, heenlisted in Company A, Ninth Regiment, Pennsyl-vania Reserve Corps, and was mustered into theUnited States service at Washington, Juty 26, 1861,as Corporal. The regiment was engaged at Dranes-ville, December 20, 1861, and the Commanding Gen-eral Ord recommended a number of officers andprivates for reward for gallant conduct in theengagement, among whom was Corporal Duff.
