Varula was horn at Osek, Archdio-cese of Ohnutz, in Moravia, on the loth of Angnst,184r), and was edncated at the gymnasium at Kremsier,from which he entered the University of Vienna in two years spent there, he resolved to embrace theclerical state, and pursued liis theological studies for threeyears in the University of Olmutz. Feeling called to de-vote himself to the American missions, he was sent to theAmerican College at Louvain in 1809, and there ordainedfor tlic Diocese of Baltimore, on the 10th of September,1870, in the College of the Jesiiit Fathers at Louvain.
