Photograph by David Coleman. The Dalgety Bridge, spanning the Snowy River in the small town of Dalgety, New South Wales, is a significant piece of Australia's rural heritage. Constructed in 1888, this bridge is a prime example of late 19th-century Australian engineering and played a crucial role in the development of the Monaro region. The bridge is an Allan type timber truss road bridge, a design that was widely used in New South Wales between 1890 and 1929. It spans 90 meters across the Snowy River and stands as one of the oldest surviving bridges of its type in the state. The Allan truss design, named after its designer Percy Allan, was an important advancement in bridge construction, allowing for longer spans and heavier loads than previous designs. Originally known as Barnes Crossing, the bridge was renamed Buckley's Crossing in honor of Edward Buckley, who established a river crossing service at this location in the 1840s. The construction of the bridge marked a significant improvement in transportation for the region, facilitating the movement of people, goods, and livestock across the Snowy River. The Dalgety Bridge has withstood numerous floods over its lifetime, including major events in 1925 and 1934. Its resilience is a testament to the quality of its design and construction. In recognition of its historical and engineering significance, the bridge was listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register in 2000. Today, the Dalgety Bridge continues to serve its original purpose, providing a vital link across the Snowy River for the local community. It also stands as a picturesque landmark, attracting photographers and history enthusiasts. The bridge's timber construction and truss design, set against the backdrop of the Snowy River and the surrounding rural landscape, create a scene that epitomizes the charm of rural Australia and its pioneering past.
