If a food cannot be digestedwithout artificial aid it should not beeaten at all, or if eaten the quantityshould be small enough to be withinthe digestive power of the diner. Some persons have lived to old agewithout any appreciable illness from indigestion; but they were persons of equable temperament, were robust to start with and practiced few indiscretions in eating or otherwise. Many ailments have their origin in faulty nutrition. Indeed,physicians know that most of those who consult them have no organic diseasebut suffer from the evil effects of errors of diet, overwork or bad habitsof life. Different kinds of food produce different kinds of trouble but the firstrequisite bearing upon relief is to reduce the total quantity of food takenwhile the trouble lasts and to endeavor to determine the kind of food and thequantity that can be best borne with freedom from discomfort. Those suffering from a feeling of distention and the eructation ofgas may have excessive fermentation in the digestive process.
