Barnacle research. Barnacles (Balanus amphtrite, foreground) on a piece of wood, being examined by a researcher in a laboratory. Barnacles have a natural adhesive that allows them to cling firmly to rocks and boats. When found on boats, they reduce the efficiency of the boat's passage through the water, requiring increased fuel consumption, and therefore increased carbon emissions.
