A flood indicator and thatched houses on an earth mound, islet of Langeness in the North Sea, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany

Hooge and Langeness, in German Hallig Hooge and Hallig Langeness, are tiny islets in the German wadden sea, formed by the flat coastal part of the North Sea, These islets are not diked so that they are flooded in storm several times a year, up to 25 times. The houses are built on earth mounds so that they flooded only extremely seldom. Also cattle and sheep are driven up the mounds at flood times.
