There are twenty-eightemployed in this office at present with a monthly pay roll of more than $ of the oldest employes is Mr. Haskell who has been identified with theoffice for more than a quarter of a century, and many people would feel thatthey had not been in the building if he did not makshis appearance, and to hiscredit may be said that he is one of the best posted men on Postal Laws andRegulations in the State of Michigan. The constantly increasing business ofthe office is being well taken care of by the present postmaster, EmanuelWilhelm, who is one of our old settlers and constant booster for the QueenCity of the JAKE TA-PA-SAHIndian Jake was the first mail carrier from the south to Traverse City in 186:5, bein? in the emDlov of Mr ?V TLay. who had the contract for this year-Jake packing it over the Indian trail on00^ from Croton a rmj^^ town m Newajro County on the -Muskegron river. PIONEERS AND PIONEERING By S. E. Wait Old Mission seemed to be the objective point for the first white settlers,there being earlier and more convenient communication between that point andMackinaw by vessels sailing between the two places. The first white settlerswere Rev. Peter Dougherty and Rev. John Fleming, who landed in MissionHarbor in May, 1839.
