An altar filled with offerings celebrates the goddess Iemanjá during the annual Iemanjá festival. Every year, on December 31st and February 2nd, crowds gather along Brazilian beaches, notably in Salvador and Rio de Janeiro, to present offerings to Iemanjá, the goddess of the sea, a deity celebrated in Afro-Brazilian cults such as Candomblé and Umbanda. She is the mother of the Orixás, the deities of nature. Most participants wear white as a sign of purity and peace.
