I have this morning received a letter from Capt. McKee, from Memphis where he has been detained on duty Since he left St Louis. David was doing well until the day previous to his death when he became Suddenly and rapidly worse till he died about the third day of this month on board the Hospital Boat ?ǣ Wood ? below Vicksburg. The Captain had not learned where he was buried, nor the name of the attending Surgeon, but Says he will make Every Effort to do so, and write you. To assure you of my most cordial sympathy in this Sore bereavement, in but a cold Expression. We cannot restore him to you. Most gladly would I do this, if possible. The Capt assures me, ?ǣhe was one of the best soldiers in the Co. ? This I will knew for myself. He always did his whole duty faithfully, promptly and cheerfully requiring no word of admonition. Of any additional information can be obtained, I will write you at once. Very truly your friend P. Draper Title: Letter signed P. Draper [Philander Draper], Louisiana, Mo., to Capt.
