Views from the Air Defence Radar Station on Pico do Arieiro, at 1,818 m high, is Madeira island's third highest peak

Pico do Arieiro is located in the hills of Funchal, and is a must visit attraction, as it allows you to have a view over much of the island and Porto Santo (if the weather allows it). Here you can see from the east end, the tip of São Lourenço, to the Paul da Serra and the mountains of São Vicente. You can also see the Curral das Freiras, on the valley floor. Pico do Arieiro is one of the most visited places on the island, due to its easy access, extraordinary views and well known nature paths to Pico das Torres and Pico Ruivo. Most days, visitors can stand and look down on the clouds. The air is fresh and clear and the sun is very bright. In 2011, an Air Defence Radar Station was built at the top of the mountain near the tourist facilities. On the way up to Pico dpo Arieiro, you will see a building, similar to an igloo, known as “snow well”. This was built by an English family in order to store ice and snow in the mountains.
