Harri-son, in his official despatch, wrote: In communi-cating to the President my opinion of the conduct ofthe officers who served under my command, I am ata loss how to mention that of Gov. Shelby, beingconvinced that no eulogium of mine can reach hismerits. The governor of an independent state,greatly my superior in age, in experience and inmilitary character, he placed himself under my com-mand and was not more remarkable for his zeal andactivity than for the promptitude and cheerfulnesswith which he obeyed my orders. At the close ofthe war. Gov. Shelby retired to private life. Presi-dent Monroe offered him the position of secretary ofwar, but he declined it. He was subsequently en-gaged with Gen.
