Fre'mont on the last leg of his western trip which lasted from 1843 to 1845. However, when it was described by Bentham (1856), the location date was given as "; In 1870, Torrey and Gray called attention to this error, but the name remained associated with the California flora until this fact was pointed out again by Reveal and Munz (l'-'68). The Gandoger name has been the subject of some nomenclatural confusion.
