He allied himself with thegreat temperance movement then agitating the country,and was a constant attendant upon meetings held in itsinterest; became secretary of the Queens County Tem-perance Society, and finally a delegate, when only 21years of age, to a State temperance convention, called forthe purpose of forming a distinct ticket in the ensuingelection. In the same spirit of public activity he asso-ciated himself with the Manhasset Lyceum, acting aschairman of its lecture committee, and undertaking theonerous duty of supplying the requisite speakers to fillthe winters
