The Foxes were first found on the northern shore of LakeOntario. From there they were driven to Detroit, thence toMackinac, and from there to the river which bears their name,at a point near its entrance into Green Bay. The Foxes sub-sequently abandoned their village, and formed a treaty ofalliance with the Sacs. Neither tribe was sufficiently strong tosuccessfully meet its enemies. Hence they became one nation,and the bond of friendship was never broken. But as early as 1718 they had obtained a firmfooting on Rock river. A party of young men descended theRock to its mouth, and upon their return they presented afavorable report of the country. Theentire tribe then migratedto the southwest, drove the Kaskaskias from the country, andfounded a village on the point of land at the confluence of Rockand Missi8si])pi rivers. At the beginning of this century theSacs and Foxes occupied lands in northwestern Illinois lyingbetween the Winnebagoes and the Mississippi river.
