Electrical treatment of shell shock. Man in a Bergonic chair, with electrodes applied to his thighs. Electric shock therapy was used to treat some shell-shocked soldiers during World War I (1914-1918). Uncontrollable tremors or paralysis of the legs could lead to the application of electric shocks to the legs.
