From the opening of the church in 1803, until1810, this church, as well as all the Methodist serv-ices held on the Island, was under the pastoratesof the Elizabethtown and Staten Island 1810, Thomas Drumrnond was sent to StatenIsland, and had charge of WToodrow and Asbury, theonly two Methodist Episcopal churches on StatenJsland. During thistime, the Staten Island churches were not prosper-ous, and it seemed best to rely largely upon localpreachers. Therefore, in 1815, the Island was madea part of the Essex, N. J., charge, and remained sofor eleven years. The old Tabernacle, now BethelChurch, had been built in 1822, and, in 1826, theconference decided to make Staten Island a sepa-rate charge, and appointed Bartholomew Weed pas-tor over the three churches—Wood row, Asbury andBethel. In 1840, three new churches having been builtwithin the previous year, or two, the Island wasdivided into two parishes, the Rev. Isaac Cross be-ing sent to the North field circuit, including Asbury,Port Richmond, Mariners Harbor and Quarantine,and the Rev. Daniel Parish to \Vestfield (Woodrowand Bethel).
