Holing at a coalface. Historical artwork of a miner engaging in the technique known as holing. This was a method used for extracting coal. Lying on his side the miner would make a horizontal cut at the bottom of a seam and then two vertical cuts at the side. The coal could then normally be removed by the use of a wedge or lever.
