Art forgery detection. Glass bottles holding samples of old paint binding agents used in the detection of forged paintings. By mass spectrosc- opy the molecular constituents of the agents can be found. X-ray diffractometry will show their crystal structure. These chemical \fingerprints\" can be matched with those from samples of dried paint taken from a suspected forgery. This will reveal whether the binding agent used in the paint is contemporary with the original artwork. The photograph was taken at the Doerner Institute in Munich, Germany, which is headed by Dr Andreas Burmester. The Institute specializes in detecting art forgeries by imaging and chemical analysis."
