(Stimson.) Secondary Suture of Tendons.—In applying secondarysutures to tendons, the principal difficulty is often encount-ered in bringing the ends of the tendon in contact and inholding them successfully in this position. The ends ofthe tendon have first to be freshened, and this maybe doneby cutting them obliquely and introducing a suture asshown in Fig. 475. This method of section presents alarge raw surface of the tendon for union. Lengthening of Tendons.—When so large a gap existsbetween the ends of the tendon that they cannot be brought TRANSPLANTATION OF TENDONS. 569 Fig. Oblique section of ends of tendon to increase surface of contact. (Stimson.) into apposition, a plastic operation may be performed upontheir ends, which often overcomes the difficulty. Thisconsists in making a section halfway through the tendons,at some distance from their ends, and splitting them towardtheir divided extremities, and then turning out these flapsand securing their ends by means of sutures (Fig. 476).
