The Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme is a major war memorial to soldiers who died during The Battle of the Somme in the First World War who have no known grave. The impressive monument stands over 45 meters high and is visible in every direction. It is the work of the architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, and comprises of sixteen pillars each engraved with the names of over 73,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers that fell during the Battle of the Somme from 1st July until November 1916 and who have no known grave. It is the largest memorial in the world maintained by The Commonwealth War Graves Commission based in England.
