Wastewater from a nature sanctuary visitor and research center is treated and recycled Initially the sewage is digested anaerobically by bacteria in underground septic tanks Then the water flows into tanks visible in the picture containing bacteria invertebrates fish and plants The organisms remove various nutrients from the water further cleansing it Finally the water moves into an artificial marsh visible as the ground plants which further removes waste nutrients for use by the plants The water is then recycled into the facility s toilets Corkscrew Swamp Audubon Sanctuary Naples Florida
