Megakaryocytes. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of megakaryocyte cells (at bottom) in the human bone marrow. Megakaryocytes are giant bone marrow cells that produce platelets (thrombocytes). Platelets are vital for blood clotting. Platelets can be seen as long thin structures budding off the megakaryocytes and being pushed into a blood vessel. Other blood cells (blue) can be seen at upper right. Magnification unknown.
